The Daintree is a fascinating part of the planet. It’s ancient, unique and diverse. So what do you need to know about this natural wonder? 1) It's hugeThe Daintree covers a massive 1200 square kilometres, making it the biggest contiguous rainforest in Australia. To put that in perspective, that makes it 14 times larger than the island of Manhattan.
4) It's oldThe world’s oldest rainforest, in fact. Estimates range anywhere from 135 million to 180 million years, but either way you look at it, that’s ancient. It’s tens of millions of years older than the gigantic Amazon rainforest. In fact, so far the Daintree has spent more time with the dinosaurs than it has without. 5) It's world heritage listedUNESCO has seen fit to put the area on its world heritage list, citing the area’s stunning natural beauty, the huge variety of ancient wildlife, and the fact that it remains almost untouched to this day, unlike many other rainforests around the world. 6) It's named after Richard DaintreeRichard Daintree came to Australia from England in 1852, and did a huge amount of work in exploring North Queensland. In reward of his hard work, his name adorns many local spots, including the town of Daintree, Daintree reef, the Daintree river and Daintree national park.
